So what's the point of blogging?

Well this is my first post to my new blog, indeed my first blog. As you can tell I'm a bit slow off the mark when it comes to social networking and things technical.
I used to have a family website, updated with accounts of what we were up to as a family, latest photos, etc. , etc. Then I stopped updating it for some reason and it became somewhat obsolite. I was reminded of this website a couple of weeks ago when I got an email saying they were closing the hosting site and I should save and transfer my content. But personal websites are old news now and blogs are the way to go (so I understand....).

So what makes a good blog? I've obviously read and looked at other blogs, mostly sports-based, or a few celeb blogs like Dave Gorman's or Chris Evans'. From what I can tell they're either a collection of musings and thoughts on topics of interest, and/or they're glorified diaries. (There are of course commercial blogs that act as sales and marketing tools, but I tend to avoid those.)

But who would be interested in my thoughts or diary entries? Well that's pretty much the same question I asked myself when I started my previous website, and my sporadic 140 character posts on Twitter. I can't imagine anyone's really interested, but somehow I've collected some 'followers'.

In times past people wrote letters, diaries and journals, allowing us to look back through these documents and the lives they led. My Dad is undertaking a project to research the family tree and he's been quite successful. Nowadays everything is done by phone, text message, email, etc. and I can't help but think what will there be for our descendents to find? Well, hopefully some content on this blog! More in depth than the odd Tweet, but easier to write and update than my old website. Hopefully I'll also keep the enthusiasm to post and maybe someone, somewhere, someday might find it of interest?

So that's the justification done.....just need some thoughts to muse over now!
